Our dear, sweet Esme passed away this morning. She spent the night at the regional hospital after being found abandoned outside. She ate on her own, but she wouldn’t move. This morning she was transferred to a clinic for monitoring and x-rays. She started to hop and seek food on her own. We were oh so hopeful.
Sadly, her x-rays showed a severe fecal blockage taking up 45% of her belly. The only possible treatment option would have been surgery, but she was far too weak to survive that. Before making any difficult decisions we were in the process of consulting the Ontario Veterinary College when we learned that Esme passed.
We are heartbroken. We are trying to find solace in knowing that in her final hours she was safe, warm, loved and hopefully in far less pain. But, we are angry. Rabbits deserve so much more. They are not disposable. They are not starter pets. They are not entertainment. They are living, loving beings who deserve kindness and compassion. We love you, Esme, and we will never give up.
